Tesla Secures Flexible Office Space Near Mumbai’s BKC to Support India Entry

Tesla, Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, has leased flexible office space near Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), India’s most expensive business district, as it strengthens its India presence. According to sources, Tesla has taken up 30 seats in a managed co-working space at Phoenix Market City for a monthly rent of ₹3 lakh. The agreement is a short-term, one-year lease with a three-month lock-in period and was finalized earlier this month between EFC and Tesla India Motor & Energy Pvt Ltd.

Opting for flexible workspace solutions at this early stage of its India operations allows Tesla to maintain agility and scalability as its business needs evolve. Tesla representatives and EFC have not yet commented publicly on the lease.

This move follows Tesla’s earlier expansion in Mumbai’s BKC area. In February 2025, the company had leased 4,000 square feet of showroom space at Maker Maxity on North Avenue, along with two car parking spaces, for ₹23.38 crore over five years, according to property registration documents accessed via CRE Matrix. The per-square-foot rent of ₹881 set a new national record, making it the most expensive auto showroom lease deal in India.

The showroom deal, registered on February 27, 2025, was executed between Univco Properties LLP, the property owner, and Tesla India Motor and Energy Pvt Ltd. Earlier reports in March confirmed Tesla’s finalization of the space at a monthly rent close to ₹35 lakh.

BKC, Mumbai’s central business district, is home to major co-working spaces such as WeWork, leading tech companies like CISCO, and key government institutions including the Reserve Bank of India, the GST and Income Tax departments, and the Family Court. The presence of the US Consulate further boosts BKC’s reputation as a center of business and governance.

Tesla’s recent moves in India come after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk in the United States earlier this year, where they discussed collaborations in space, mobility, and technology. Following this, Tesla began accelerating its India plans.

According to a Reuters report, Tesla had resumed its search for showroom spaces across India late last year after previously pausing its India entry plans in 2022. Additionally, in February 2025, Tesla posted 13 mid-level job openings in Mumbai and Delhi, including roles for store managers and customer relationship managers, as reported by Bloomberg.

Tesla’s strategic leasing decisions and hiring activities suggest that the company is preparing for a more aggressive push into India’s EV market, now the third-largest auto market globally.
