MahaRERA De-Registers Nearly 19,000 Property Brokers to Enforce Compliance and Transparency

In a decisive step to strengthen transparency and professionalism in Maharashtra’s real estate sector, the Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) has de-registered 18,693 property brokers. This action was taken due to non-renewal of licenses and the failure to complete mandatory training and certification, as required under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.

Since its inception in May 2017, MahaRERA has registered a total of 50,673 agents, of which 31,980 registrations remain active. The de-registrations signal a strong regulatory push to bring order and accountability to the intermediary segment that plays a critical role in property transactions.

City-wise Breakdown of De-Registered Agents:

  • Mumbai City: 2,463
  • Mumbai Suburbs: 5,538
  • Thane: 4,303
  • Pune: 3,476

Why Were Agents De-Registered?

  • Failure to renew licenses
  • Non-completion of mandatory certification
  • Operating in secondary resale markets not governed by MahaRERA

To promote ethical practices and informed transactions, MahaRERA has made it mandatory for all agents to obtain certification starting January 2024. This applies to both new registrations and renewals.

Agents must be knowledgeable in key areas like:

  • Model Sale Agreement
  • Allotment Letter
  • Carpet Area
  • Defect Liability Period

Those conducting real estate transactions without certification will face strict action.

Broader Reach and Impact
MahaRERA is now the first state regulator in India to enforce certification for agents. Its influence extends beyond Maharashtra, with agents from over 150 cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Goa, Patna, and Indore registering with the authority. This highlights Maharashtra’s growing stature in the national real estate landscape.

Regional Distribution of Active Agents:

  • Konkan Region (incl. MMR): 21,050
  • Pune: 8,205
  • Nagpur: 1,504
  • North Maharashtra: 490
  • Sambhajinagar: 343
  • Amravati: 237

MahaRERA’s crackdown on non-compliant brokers reinforces its mission: building trust in real estate dealings, ensuring that homebuyers receive accurate information, and maintaining discipline in the broker community.

This move sends a clear message—compliance is mandatory, and the regulator is committed to creating a transparent and consumer-friendly property market.
