DDA Clears 24 Acres on Yamuna Floodplain, Demolishes Over 4,400 Illegal Structures

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it has successfully reclaimed approximately 24 acres of land from the Yamuna floodplain, clearing it of unauthorized constructions. This effort is part of a broader campaign to address large-scale encroachments on more than 7,362 hectares out of the total 9,700-hectare floodplain zone, designated as Zone O in the Delhi Master Plan 2021.
In a series of coordinated operations conducted with the Delhi Police, the DDA removed over 4,400 illegal jhuggis (slum dwellings), 25 religious structures, six dairies, and three cricket grounds. These structures had encroached on ecologically sensitive land critical for groundwater recharge and flood control in the city.
However, the DDA’s efforts are not without obstacles. Legal proceedings have led to stay orders on demolition in certain areas, including Majnu ka Tilla, which remains partially encumbered. The NGT has previously criticized the DDA for slow progress in floodplain clearance and urged more urgent action to restore ecological balance.
To prevent future encroachments, the DDA has installed 93 CCTV cameras at 27 key points across the floodplain. Alongside enforcement, it is also focusing on ecological restoration through the development of biodiversity parks, riverfront ghats, and other rehabilitation projects aimed at revitalizing the floodplain ecosystem.
Despite continued legal and operational challenges, the DDA’s latest drive marks a significant step in protecting the Yamuna floodplain. Long-term preservation will depend on sustained efforts, strong inter-agency coordination, and active community engagement to safeguard these environmentally vital zones.
