Noida Cracks Down on Illegal Farmhouses Along Yamuna Floodplains with Drone Surveillance

The Noida Authority is intensifying efforts to curb illegal construction on the Yamuna floodplains, preparing to issue notices to around 250 farmhouse owners who have built permanent structures in areas designated strictly for agriculture.

While land transactions in these zones are not unlawful, any construction beyond agricultural use is explicitly banned. Since May 2022, the Authority has demolished nearly 200 unauthorized farmhouses. However, the process slowed after several owners secured stay orders from the Allahabad High Court, temporarily pausing demolition activities.

In a renewed push, the Authority has launched drone-based aerial surveys across the Yamuna and Hindon floodplains to identify fresh violations and assess whether any farmhouses are being misused for commercial purposes. These surveys are part of a broader initiative aimed at mapping unauthorized developments in the region.

To bolster public awareness, the Noida Authority is also installing large hoardings in floodplain areas, warning against land purchases and construction in these restricted zones.

The Yamuna River flows through several sectors in Noida—including 94, 124, 125, 127, 128, 131, 133, 134, 135, 150, and 168—while the Hindon River passes through localities such as Chhijarsi, Shahdara, Suthiana, Garhi Chowkhandi, and sectors 123, 118, 115, 143, 143A, 148, 150, and Momnathal, eventually merging with the Yamuna near Sector 63A and Behlolpur.

These floodplain regions are classified as “submerged zones”, where all forms of construction are prohibited. While the current focus is on the Yamuna floodplain, authorities have made it clear that no new construction will be allowed along the Hindon either. Existing illegal structures near Hindon are not slated for demolition at this time, but officials have warned that any new violations detected post-survey will result in strict accountability for both Authority and irrigation department personnel.

Despite earlier setbacks due to legal interventions, the Noida Authority is now adopting a proactive strategy centered on surveillance and preventive awareness, which could set a benchmark for similar enforcement actions in other parts of the country facing unregulated development on ecologically sensitive land.
