In a major step toward inclusive urban development, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for constructing over 1,000 affordable housing units in Gram Sindhora. This initiative is part of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) 2.0 and aims to provide sustainable housing solutions to economically weaker sections of society.

The decision was taken during a recent mayor-in-council meeting, where officials emphasized the importance of bridging the urban housing gap and improving living standards for marginalized communities.

Alongside housing, the meeting highlighted multiple initiatives to strengthen the city’s disaster preparedness. A dedicated Disaster Management Cell will be set up to address risks from earthquakes, floods, and fires. As part of this effort, each ward will appoint 8 to 10 ‘Disaster Friends’, who will receive specialized training in coordination with the district administration and police.

Urban beautification also featured prominently in the discussions. IMC proposed a plan encouraging social organizations to adopt and maintain public spaces such as road dividers, green belts, and gardens. This initiative is aimed at improving the city’s aesthetics and promoting community participation.

To support informal workers, the council announced a survey to identify and register street vendors and cart operators. An appointed agency will carry out the survey, issue identity cards, and submit data to the IMC within a stipulated timeframe.

Further promoting inclusive mobility, the IMC has decided to reimburse the costs of concessional monthly passes for students, senior citizens, differently-abled individuals, and ragpickers. This move is designed to enhance accessibility across the city.

In a step toward sustainable waste management, the mayor also introduced a plan to reuse clothes collected from waste, following the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) model. This public-private partnership project received in-principle approval and aligns with the city’s broader environmental goals.

Through its multi-pronged approach—spanning affordable housing, disaster resilience, beautification, mobility, and waste reuse—Indore is making strides toward building a more inclusive, sustainable, and livable urban future.
